Fly over Cape Roberts onto the continent, through the dry valleys, over mountain ranges, and glaciers, then around Koettlize Glacier onto the Ross Ice Shelf, over the Black and White Islands, McMurdo Research Station, Ross Island, and Mount Erebus. EROS created the fly-through by merging Landsat ETM+ sensor’s natural color bands 3, 2, and 1 (red, green, blue) with the panchromatic band 8 for a pan-sharpened view at 15-m spatial resolution.
Start high above the Washington Monument, then fly from east to west over the United States, and the Pacific Ocean to Antarctica. Zoom in on Wright and Taylor Dry Valleys, over Hut Point Peninsula and McMurdo Research Station on Ross Island, then continue to explore more of the dry valleys. EROS created this fly-through with late 1990's data from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor bands 2, 4, and 7 (green, near-infrared, mid-infrared) at 30-m spatial resolution.
Cold Regions Project, American Geological Institute

Scientists are studying environmental changes that have resulted in a vast decline in numbers of krill—tiny, shrimplike creatures that are the backbone of the food chain in the surrounding seas. As Antarctica becomes less isolated, the challenge will be to protect these ecosystems and the seals, penguins, and whales that rely on them.

Explore LIMA--virtually cloudless, seamless, most geometrically accurate, and highest resolution satellite mosaic of Antarctica. A team of scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the British Antarctic Survey, with funding from the National Science Foundation, created LIMA in support of the International Polar Year.

The Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA) is the first-ever true-color high-resolution satellite view of the Antarctic continent enabling everyone to see Antarctica as it appears in real life. This web site is designed as part of the International Polar Year to familiarize people with Antarctica, to explore the richness its features, to learn about why Antarctica matters to us all, and to explain and demonstrate how scientists use satellite imagery to study the continent.
The Polar View programme is now extending services to the Southern Hemisphere. This will initially focus on delivering near real time information to contribute to safe and efficient ship navigation in sea ice. Users will primarily consist of national science programmes and tour ships, with later inclusion of other operators such as commercial shipping companies.
